World of Tanks developer Wargaming has revealed that it would need sales of 5 – 10 million Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headsets to add VR support into its title. Cheift executive Victor Kislyi confirmed as much, stating that he was impressed with the technology but needed to see a larger install base before the free-to-play combat title could pledge support.

WorldofTanks_1“If it’s big, if it’s global, we’re going to be there,” Kislyi told CVG when asked about possible Oculus Rift support.

“We are free-to-play, and now even further down the road, we are free-to-win. Seventy-five per cent of our players never pay a penny, and we love those players.

“For free-to-play, five to ten million is a good user-base. So if Xbox One or Oculus reach those numbers, we’re there.”

These figures are significantly higher than publisher Ubisoft’s own needs. The company has said that it would require sales of 1 million VR headsets to make it a viable development platform. VRFocus will continue to follow the progress all the VR headsets and report back with the latest.
