Mod of the Week: Painkiller: Hell & Damnation

Over the past few weeks VRFocusMod of the Week column has delivered a breakdown of how to adapt existing titles for use with the Oculus Rift headset via the Tridef 3D injection driver. Given the wide variety of uses and the fact that a free demonstration version of the driver is available, this has proven very popular amongst our readers. Therefore, today’s Mod of the Week will be now different. The Tridef 3D injection driver will be the catalyst once again, and this time it’s the turn of The Farm 51′s Painkiller: Hell & Damnation.

Painkiller: Hell & Damnation is a remake of the 2004 classic developed by People Can Fly, the team that went on to become involved in the Gears of War franchise after successfully porting the original title to PC. Painkiller: Hell & Damnation felt like an appropriate choice for this feature for one very good reason: The Farm 51 has already announced an original virtual reality (VR) experience, Get Even. Many VR fans will be interested in experiencing their previous titles, and today VRFocus reveals just how you can do that through the use of VR.

Set-Up

To begin, ensure that you have the latest version of Painkiller: Hell & Damnation installed. Also, it’s best to begin with the single-player element: Painkiller: Hell & Damnation is a very fast-paced videogame and the erratic movement of other human players can induce simulator sickness.

The Tridef 3D injection driver can be downloaded from the official DDD website and used for 14 days without requiring payment. An in-development Oculus Rift compatibility add-on can then be downloaded from the official Tridef 3D forums. Ensure that both of these assets have been downloaded and installed correctly before attempting to run Painkiller: Hell & Damnation on an Oculus Rift headset.

Load Tridef 3D Ignition and select ‘Add Game’. The client will automatically detect your installation (in the unlikely case that it doesn’t find Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, simply select ‘Add Game Manually’ and follow the on-screen prompts). Once detected, boot the videogame from within this client.

The videogame will automatically launch in stereoscopic 3D with headtracking enabled. In the case of Painkiller: Hell & Damnation, the headtracking replicates the mouse look (or right analog stick) though the handheld peripherals can also be used to greater movement of the viewpoint, including sharp turns.

As with many first-person experiences, the viewer window presented by Painkiller: Hell & Damnation may need to be expanded to fill your field of vision. Simply press the ’0′ key on your numberpad to access the Tridef 3D menu and browse the ‘HMD Settings’ menu, adjusting the various ‘FOV’ values as necessary.
