When virtual reality (VR) fans talk about the history of the technology, the holodeck from science fiction series Star Trek: The Next Generation is usually referenced. Appearing in the pilot episode of the series in 1987, it provided a visualisation of what we might one day expect from a full VR experience. Now an indie developer has paid tribute to the concept, with its own videogame that supports of the Oculus Rift VR headset.

The experience, simply titled Holodeck, is a tech demo that has been created by Thiago Alcantara. It uses the concept of the holodeck from the Star Trek series, with players controlling a boy that must navigate three different mazes based in jungle, desert and snow-based environments. The title appears to be controlled from a third-person persepctive, with players guiding the boy through the maze as they look over the various paths. It was developed using the Unity 4 Engine.

It’s not yet clear if Holodeck might evolve into something bigger later down the line or if the developer has already moved on from the project. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, bringing you any more news on videogames and other experiences.
