An alleged industry insider has hinted that virtual reality (VR) experiences are coming to Sony’s PlayStation 4 console, possibly with a Sony-made VR headset. Ahsan Rasheed has taken to Twitter to suggest that the company will be revealing its VR plans before E3 2014 this June.
Rasheed, named thuway on Twitter, originally posted: “Ugh I just got a bit of info I was sworn to secrecy on :-/. VR is going to be amazing. You will say KANDO.
“Very interesting solutions, multiple prototypes, but the end product is Hnnnnng. Say hello to Gran Turismo 7,” he continued, suggesting that the Japanese company is producing its own VR headset.
While Sony has shown off 3D headsets and visors in the past, this is the first we’ve heard about the company branching into VR. Gran Turismo is Sony’s popular racing simulation series, which has pushed some of the company’s initiatives, such as 3D videogames, in the past. It saw its last release in Gran Turismo 6 on PS3 in 2014.
Rasheed mentioned PlayStation 4 VR in one final tweet, listing upcoming Sony projects:
“Things to look forward to-
1. Drive Club updated footage
2 PS4 VR + SSM New IP
3. UC 4
4. Guerilla new IP
6. The Last Guardian“”
SSM likely refers to Sony Santa Monica, the development studio behind God of War and other projects. Could the pairing mean that Santa Monica is working on a VR videogame? Rasheed has had an accurate track record with rumours in the past, but this should still be taken with a pinch of salt for now. VRFocus will keep you up-to-date with any developments of a PlayStation 4 VR headset going forward.
