Mod of the Week: QUAKE II

A legendary videogame that undeniably changed the face of the first-person shooter (FPS) genre forever, QUAKE II is still considered a masterpiece by many. And rightly so, as even to this day it’s used as a barometer against which to compare modern corridor style FPS experiences. It’s no surprise then, given John Carmack’s virtual reality love affair, that QUAKE II has been retroactively updated to offer native Oculus Rift support.

Unlike most titles that have received support for Oculus Rift retroactively, QUAKE II does not automatically update and present the option from it’s menu screen. Instead and external patch must be downloaded from id Software’s own resources portal, GitHub. Details for this and the entire process follow below and VRFocus will keep you updated with other id Software titles offering support for virtual reality devices.

Set-Up

To begin with, it’s worth noting that there is an Open Source version of QUAKE II available for free download. However, this version of the videogame is missing some modern compatibility files that made it far more difficult to initiate theĀ supportĀ for the Oculus Rift headset. Instead, VRFocus recommends a purchase of the most recent edition of the videogame or fully updating your existing version before beginning.

Once updated, visit https://github.com/dghost/Quake2VR and download the ‘Quake II VR Binaries package’. Unzip the folder and copy ‘pak0.pak’, ‘players\’ and ‘videos\’ (and all their contents) from the default QUAKE II ‘baseq2′ directory into the ‘baseq2′ folder within the ‘Quake2-Rift’ directory.

Ensure that your Oculus Rift headset is plugged in and turned on, then launch the ‘kmquake2.exe’ application included in the ‘Quake2-Rift’ folder. QUAKE II will automatically adapt to work not only with your Oculus Rift headset but also your default Oculus Profile. Should you find that the compatibility isn’t perfect, simply access the in-game console using ‘~’ and enter ‘vr_enable’.
