Throughout 2014 VRFocus has been reporting on Porco Grande, an unusual virtual reality (VR) fitness videogame that casts players as an overweight pig. This week sees developer Johan Pruijs launch a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, looking for €45,000 to help fund the creation of the title, which supports the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) and is developed using Crytek’s CryEngine 3.

Porco Grande stars the titular pig, who discovers that he is too fat to drive his vehicle, the Porco-Mobile to see his girlfriend, Porco Cinne. Removing the engine from the vehicle, Porco Grande must instead cycle to Porco Cinne’s house, consuming healthy foods to travel fast while avoiding fatty ones that will slow progress. Players will also encounter enemies that must be shot off of the road.

The title can be played with a standard controller but is designed for use with an excersise bike connected to a computer. The idea is that players themselves will lose weight as they travel to Porco Cinne’s house. Players will constnatly try to perfect times as they travel to the house. Eventually Porco Grande can become so light that the Porco-Mobile will actually take flight.

Those interested in the experience can currently back €10 to secure a digital copy and entry into the early access beta, which is expected to arrive in September 2015 on PC. The campaign will close on 11th October 2014. VRFocus will continue to follow Porco Grande going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
