Back in February 2014 indie developer DarkAkuma released a virtual reality (VR) adaption of the Temple of Time from the classic 1998 videogame, The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. The free demo was fully compatible with the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) and allowed players to explore the iconic location in great depth. Now the developer has released another demo based on the celebrated title.

KokiriForest_1This time the developer has created a VR compatible version of Kokiri Forest, where players find themselves at the start of the title. Unlike the third-person original, the memorable environment can be explored in first-person using either the Oculus Rift’s first or second development kits (DK2). It was developed using the Unity engine and can currently be downloaded for free over on the official Oculus VR Share Beta.

Many of the classic locations found in Kokiri Forest can be found in the demo, including the chest that contains the Kokiri Sword and the entrance to the Lost Woods that overlooks the entire area. It also appears that the demo runs on a day and night cycle similar to the original experience, allowing users to view the environment in another light.

VR recreations of scenes such as this have been popular among indie developers. With the Oculus Rift’s second development kit recently issuing its first shipments, fans will soon be able to explore such projects in even greater detail with a 1080p display and positional tracking. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
