While famed developer Valve has updated arguably its most popular videogame, Half-Life 2, with support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) in the past, one of its other celebrated classics, Portal 2, is yet to see such an upgrade. Official support could well be arriving along with the Sixense STEM motion controller, as the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC) revealed, but until then fans may have to make do with this new fan-made expansion for Portal 2, which is now on Steam Greenlight.

That title is Revature Laboratories, a first-person adventure experience set in the same world as Portal and compatible with the Oculus Rift. Players are cast as a supervisor at the titular company, which was co-founded by Cave Johnson, the co-founder of the full title’s Aperture Science. Players will be guided through the campaign by a range of AI systems, with the developer suggesting that such systems might end up hindering progress instead of helping. It’s not yet clear if the title will feature puzzles similar to the main experience.

As Revature Laboratories is essentially a mod for Portal 2, the title will require the latter’s installation to be played. The developer has also revealed that it won’t be releasing the campaign if Valve has issues in any way with the project. It is intended to release as soon as possible following its approval on Steam Greenlight. VRFocus will continue to follow Revature Laboratories going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
